    With a nominal GDP of over USD 29 trillion, the United States remains the world’s largest economy and a leading destination for international trade and investment. Within this context, California stands out with an economic output exceeding USD 4.1 trillion, larger than that of countries such as France or the United Kingdom.

    California is not only a driver of established industries but also a launchpad for future-oriented sectors such as cleantech, biotech and artificial intelligence. These ecosystems make the region a global trendsetter where Belgian companies, thanks to their expertise, can find strong partners and establish innovative collaborations.

    California is also a breeding ground for opportunities. The state combines a robust defence sector and a leading aerospace industry with a worldwide reputation in entertainment and sports. With the Olympic Games in 2028 and the FIFA World Cup in 2026 on the horizon, California’s economic and international impact will continue to grow in the years ahead.

    This study was conducted by the Belgian Foreign Trade Agency, which, together with its partners the Ministry of Defence, the FPS Foreign Affairs, Flanders Investment & Trade, hub.brussels, and the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency, organized the Belgian Economic Mission to the U.S. West Coast from 4 to 12 October 2025 under the Presidency of HRH Princess Astrid.
